The School of Legal Studies is a pioneer in encouraging PG studies and research in socially relevant, nationally/internationally important and emerging areas of law such as Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Consumer Protection Law, Environmental Law, Human rights, Commercial Law, Maritime Law and Intellectual property law.

The School of Legal Studies School of Legal School is one of the oldest Law Schools in India. The Law School was initially started as a part of the Kerala University in the year 1962 and it became part of Cochin University in the year 1971. SLS has made valuable contributions to the study and research of law in the past 54 years, fully living up to the motto of CUSAT ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu’ meaning ‘may the wisdom accrued deify us both-the teacher and the taught and percolate to the universe in its totality.

SLS offers LLB, LLM and Ph.D programmes. The LLB Programme, started in 1994 as an evening programme, is now semesterised, full day programme. From 2009 as per the directions from the Bar Council of India, the 5 Year LLB. course had been restructured and a BBA. LL.B programme is offered in its place. In the year 2013 SLS has also started B.Com. LLB programme. Both BBA. LLB and B.Com. LLB programme consists of regular course of study for a minimum period of 10 semesters in five years after plus two. The course of study shall be by regular attendance at the requisite number of lectures, tutorials and practical training. The medium of instruction shall be English. Number of seats: Number of students to be admitted each year shall be decided and notified by the University from time to time.

SLS offers both full time and part time Ph.D programme in law for the purpose of encouraging research in contemporary legal issues.
